The Sunninghill dance group will represent South Africa in Spain

A traditional folk dance group based in Sunninghill, Ensemble Balkan SA will fly to Europe on June 21 to represent the country at the 12th Calella International Folk Dance Festival in Spain.

Ensemble Balkan SA was created in 2011 by Zoran Lagator and has won numerous trophies in national and international folk dance competitions.

Lagator said the group had managed to represent the country on international stages despite the lack of sponsors at home.

He said they were going to the festival in Spain to once again fly the South African flag high, although some members were not on the trip due to a lack of sponsorship to buy plane tickets.

“Ensemble Balkan SA has participated in different international folklore festivals all over the world, from Spain to Montenegro and even Brazil without any government support. We have been accepted as a member of the International Council of Folklore and Folk Art Festival Organizations and will soon be competing as representatives of South Africa in their upcoming festivals.

He said the group was made up of more than 20 dancers of different nationalities based in Johannesburg.

“Only 12 members will be part of our trip to Spain later this month. We are unable to purchase tickets and costumes for each member of the group. We call on our government and our businessmen to lend a hand in sponsoring our journey.
