Maple Ridge dance group wins for hip-hop routine at View Dance Challenge – Maple Ridge News

The hip-hop group from a dance center in Maple Ridge won the best dance award at the Vancouver View Challenge.

The group of 20 dancers, aged 11 to 16, were thrilled after winning the title of best dance for the entire competition – beating companies from all over the Lower Mainland.

Called “The Showdown”, each studio got to choose a number to enter the category and the judges awarded the most entertaining number.

The winning number was called Ready or Not and the group had been repeating it since September of last year.

“They were so happy,” said Courtny Thane, co-owner of the CentreStage Dance Centre. “Especially after the last two years.”

It was like all the hard work had paid off, she explained.

And it was the first full audience for the dance group, which has competed at the Hyatt Regency in Vancouver, since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

CentreStage Dance Center also won the title of best studio in the competition. For this, the three judges took the top 10 group number scores and counted them together for the highest score.

Each dance school participating in the competition had about 20 to 30 groups registered.

The View Dance Challenge is a national dance competition held in Vancouver approximately three times a year. Dance companies from throughout the Greater Vancouver, Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley areas, and beyond, participate in the event.

The next View Dance Challenge will take place in Vancouver from May 27-29 at the Sheraton Vancouver Airport.

Thane said the dancers worked really hard on their numbers before the event.

And in winning the awards, Thane found that all of their hard work was being recognized – in addition to the hard work of hip hop instructor Jocelyn Heaps.

“And just to see the kids – to see them this happy and excited, it’s all worth it,” she said.

For winning the Showdown, the group took home $1,000 which they will also split.

And for winning Best Studio, they received a trip for two for the owners of the studio to the Caribbean.

Next up for the dance studio is the Evolve Dance Competition taking place at the ACT Arts Center from Wednesday, April 20-24.

The Vancouver View Challenge took place from April 7-10.
