Lebanese Dance Group The Mayyas Win Season 17 of ‘America’s Got Talent’

(NBC) – ‘America’s Got Talent’ crowned its season 17 winner and a lot of girl power was involved.

In a finale packed with international acts, a pole dancing visualist from Australia and a female dance crew from Lebanon were the last two acts standing. The Beirut Dancers walked away with the Season 17 win and the show’s $1 million prize.

“We were shaking in fear at first, but then of course it made so much sense because hard work pays off and we put a lot of effort into it,” said a member of The Mayyas.

The 36-person team wowed the judges in their audition at the start of the season, winning the golden buzzer from Sofia Vergara.

“The moment I saw these girls at the audition I knew something was up, I knew there was something different about them,” Vergara said.

That impression grew during the semi-finals of the season and in their final performance on Tuesday night.

“I have never seen 36 people come together and do something so original, so impressive,” said judge Howie Mandel.

“It was absolutely the right act to win,” judge Simon Cowell said. ” I believe him. Because we’ve never seen anything like it before.

And it was hard for finalist Kristy Sellars to be disappointed.

“I just can’t believe with the level of talent that was in this final, that I’m second,” Sellars said.

While for the winners, family members on the other side of the world awaited news.

“The first step was just calling them and seeing their tears was the best feeling ever,” a member of Mayyas said.

“Lebanon was awake and alive and waiting,” added another member of the group.

Third place went to country singer Drake Milligan.

“It’s also to show you how close it was if you got two No. 1 hits and he was third,” host Terry Crews said.

And now Vegas awaits the Mayyas.

“I hope Vegas is ready for us because we’re ready for Vegas,” said the group’s founding choreographer, Nadim Cherfan.

Artificial intelligence gurus Metaphysic finished fourth in the competition and country trio Chapel Hart finished fifth.
