Dance troupe perform Christina Aguilera’s track ahead of Brighton Pride
A choreographer gave a warm welcome to Pride headliner Christina Aguilera as she performed the hit song “Dirrty” across town.
Andrea Walker, founder of the Brighton-based 201 Dance Company, assembled a team of dancers and took to the streets to perform a street dance routine to the 2002 track at well-known Brighton venues including The Lanes , the Old Steine and the beach. .
The tribute is the third of its kind for Pride, with Kylie Minogue joining for a cameo in 2019 as she prepared to headline the festival in Preston Park.
Andrea said: “When Christina Aguilera was announced as the headliner for Brighton and Hove Pride I knew I wanted 201 to do something special.
“We involved the whole community and brought on the best dancers we knew, truly on a mission to live our best lives in a dance video that celebrates homosexuality, love and also his amazing career.
“Christina headlining Pride was pretty exciting, but next month also marks the 20th anniversary of ‘Dirrty’. I knew there was no other choice when it came to the song on which we were going to dance.
She also said she was very happy to welcome Pride back to the city after a two-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Andrea said: “In the past these Pride dance videos have brought together the whole Brighton dance community.
“It was disheartening not being able to create one for the past few years, so we really wanted to go all out with this one.
“You could feel the energy in the rehearsal room was electric from the start. Hope the excitement kicks in – we absolutely loved creating this year’s video. »
The video’s final scene features over 60 dancers from the city’s dance community.
“Pride is about inclusion, so I really wanted the final moments of the video to have dancers from different backgrounds, styles, and skill sets,” Andrea said.
201 Dance Company returns to Edinburgh Fringe later this month with a new show, SAD BOOK, based on an award-winning novel by Michael Rosen.
Christina Aguilera will take to the main stage at the Pride Festival in Preston Park tomorrow night.
