Atlantic City Dance Troupe Wins National Competition in Florida | Local News

The 15-member Hot Topic Dance Academy, based out of the Atlantic City Police Athletic League, won a national dance competition last week in Florida, their dance instructor Whitney Brown said Sunday.

The dance academy did well enough at a regional competition on April 20 in Princeton, Mercer County, to earn an invite to the Florida competition, Brown said.

The cost to take the 14 girls and one boy, ages 9 to 12, was more than $9,000, she said.

The Hot Topic dancers were able to raise money in a short time thanks to fundraisers, donations through Facebook and money from All Star One Cheerleading parents in Egg Harbor Township.

A group also traveled to Florida, Brown said.

Hot Topic was one of only two teams in that state in the dance division, Brown said. Most of the teams were there for the cheerleading, she said.

Due to their age, members of the Hot Topic Dance Academy were expected to show off their skills in the youth division, but there were not enough kids in Florida for them to compete in their category.

So the dance troupe had to battle it out against 12- to 15-year-olds with a 2-minute, 30-second performance in the junior hip hop dance category, Brown said.
