America’s Got Talent crowns a new champion! Lebanese dance troupe The Mayyas wins season 17

America’s Got Talent crowned its new winner!

After weeks of competition, the Mayyas have been named the champions of the season 17 competition series. With the grand prize, the Lebanese all-girl dance troupe take home the million dollar prize and a headlining show at the Luxor Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

The Mayyas first caught America’s attention during their mind-blowing audition, prompting Judge Sofía Vergara to press her Golden Buzzer.

“I would be so honored to empower you even more on this journey because you deserve it and I want to be a part of it,” Vergara, 50, said in the episode before hitting his buzzer. She also told PEOPLE how she got “goosebumps” watching their performance.

During the live shows, the band delivered another mesmerizing dance routine that fellow judge and executive producer Simon Cowell said would “change the world”.

“They’re Vegas ready – I’d go watch them,” fellow judge Heidi Klum told PEOPLE shortly after the live show. “I think they’re amazing. It’s the costumes. It’s like mind-blowing moments. It’s like memorizing, it’s haunting. They hypnotize you in a way.”

“I think by far, for me personally, this is probably the most impressive and wonderful act I’ve seen in my years on this show,” added judge Howie Mandel. “It’s not like anything you can describe. It was amazing. It was just beautiful and mesmerizing and mesmerizing and powerful. Then consider where they are from and what the culture is, and what they’re up against and what women are anyway, all over the world. They need to be the standard bearers for women’s empowerment.

Of the positive reception, the group’s founder, Nadim Cherfan, told PEOPLE: “[It’s] absolutely amazing. We have to swallow. We couldn’t swallow those feelings, but hearing those comments from those judges gave us a huge boost of confidence.”
